AUSTIN (KXAN) — Students and teachers at Blackshear Elementary are celebrating after earning a national award for education excellence.
The East Austin school has been named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
Not long ago this same school was at risk of being shut down. In the past Blackshear Elementary had been labeled as low-performing.
Last year the school was transformed into Austin ISD’s first fine arts academy. The principal, Betty Jenkins, says the transformation is what sparked the school’s major changes.
“The culture has changed. Individuals want to be here at Blackshear Elementary. Our teachers want to be here. So anyone you want to see is here because their heart is here. They’re committed and they’re dedicated,” said Jenkins.
Blackshear Elementary is one of the 28 schools recognized in Texas with the Blue Ribbon award.
