AUSTIN (KXAN) — There is a push to bring the top researchers in the world to Texas universities. This will not only help schools shine brighter, but also elevate the state’s economy.

Governor Greg Abbott’s University Research Initiative would offer grants matched by the schools for creating labs and other costs.

Specifically, the initiative aims to recruit Nobel laureates and top researchers in science, medicine and engineering.

Prominent researchers can bring up a school’s reputation, bring millions in government-funded projects and offer the potential for private-sector start-ups. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
