Police see an increase in bicycle thefts in South Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department’s use of a “bait bike” led them to the arrest of a local man, arrest records show.

An affidavit shows Pete Daniel Valdez, 23, was spotted taking the bicycle from the bike rack at the H-E-B at ff of I-35 and William Cannon in South Austin. Police had planted the bike there as part of a sting operation aimed at curbing the number of bike thefts in that part of the city. Police followed him for several blocks and arrested Valdez, according to the court documents. Valdez is charged with theft.

Austin police say they’ve noticed a large number of of bicycle thefts in South Austin. Since April, there have been nearly two dozen thefts of bicycles reported every month in South Austin.
