East Austin families protest to buy more time before apartments are demolished

Families protesting outside LakeView Apartments in East Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Four days. That’s how long families in East Austin have until they must be out of their apartments before they are demolished.

Residents at the LakeView Apartments tell KXAN they were given a heads up four months ago, but some say they still have nowhere to go.

“We don’t have a lot of money, we’re just trying to make a living day by day,” said resident Joey Carmona.

He was one of a couple dozen people who held a protest outside the complex Saturday morning holding signs and reciting chants.

“What they’re trying to do is move us out as fast as they can,” said Carmona.

Even if their voices are not heard, the families are hoping handwritten letters will make a difference.

They taped them on the apartment office doors.

It is their final plea before their home comes crumbling down.

“It’s hard right now for all of us — especially with little kids,” said Carmona.

Nearly 100 families displaced have children in Austin ISD schools. Some attend nearby Martin Middle School.
The school district is doing what they can to keep them close, but with the rising cost of living in Austin that may not be likely.

Apartment management has not responded to KXAN’s requests for information.
