AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new football team is coming to to a town near you.
The Legends Football League held its first tryouts at the SoccerZone in Austin and had as many as 50 women show up to show their skills on the gridiron. Women came from across the state to try for the new Austin Acoustic’s team, which got its name from local fan submissions.
Only 19 players made the cut at Saturday’s tryouts, including Missy Bourque. You might recognize her name — she owns the title of Mr. Austin.
“I’ve been competing in pageants since I was a little girl, but I always wanted to play football. My brother got to play football and I was a cheerleader,” Bourque said.
Bourque has played in other leagues in Austin, but she says the LFL is the “NFL for women”.
“It just didn’t seem real that they were coming to Austin, there’s no other way to say it, this has been my dream, this is it,”she said.
During the tryouts, Bourque’s number one fan was watching eagerly from the stands — her 9-year-old daughter, Brinnie.
“I love watching her, she’s like a giant tackle banana. It’s showing me that I can do anything.”
Bourque loves being able to set an example for her daughter and shoe her if you set your mind to anything, you can accomplish it.
“I want to set the best representation of what a strong woman is today for her,” Bourque said.
The league has received some backlash from critics, claiming the “barely there” uniforms only objectifies women.
The players say they don’t play for the uniforms, in fact they play in spite of them.
“At the end of the day I work my butt off. My body is my body and I really don’t care what people think about what I’m wearing,” Bourque said.
Even little Brinnie agrees, it’s not about what her mom is wearing, it’s about how hard she’s working.
“I think the girls are more aggressive than the boys,” she said.
Bourque says she’s ready to prove to Central Texas and to the country that women can play a sport they’ve always been told they can’t.
“They always tell you in men’s football, “Leave it all out on the field, blood sweat and tears,” well women really do that.”
The Acoustics will be holding another open tryout in January. Coaches for the team are currently being interviewed, according to the league.
The Legends Football League’s season is set to begin in April 2016. The Austin Acoustics will be playing their home games at the Cedar Park Center.
The creation of an Austin team was announced earlier in the year. Currently there are six other teams in the league, playing in cities including Chicago, Las Vegas, and Seattle.
