Vic Mathias Shores reopening ceremony unveils renovations

Auditorium shores now Vic Mathias Shores.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has been working on improvements for Auditorium Shores, unveiling the park’s new name along with some renovations.

The park now, Vic Mathias Shores, has a fresh focus on accommodating park-goers, events, and community gatherings.

The goal of the renovation project was to enhance the public park space. By adding addition parking now the more of the community can flock to the park. Other changes include electrical enhancements, a new water fountain with colder water, and new bathrooms.

The project even kept local dogs in mind creating and designing an off-leash area for puppies to frolic.

More runners can hit the trails with expanded and realigned paths.

The environment was also a factor in renovations with a newly created rain garden for bio-filtration, and new trees planted.

Vic Mathias, an Austinite, World War II veteran, and CEO of Austin’s Chamber of Commerce, was voted as the new name of the park to honor his memory.
