It is important to be careful with unused pharmaceutical because they can easily end up in the wrong hands, leading to poisoning or contaminating the local water supply.

Police say proper disposal of drugs is key to protecting the Earth from medication misuse. Every year the U.S. reports over 71,000 children aged 18 and under unintentionally overdose on prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs. Taking a medication not prescribed to you can lead to serious health issues.

Over 100 various drugs have been found in streams, lakes, and rivers around the world from people pouring excess medications down the drain or flushing them in toilets.

Police are providing numerous alternatives to flushing your excess drugs. They say you can find a safe drug disposal site closest to you. Another option is to recycle the unused drugs by placing them in a disposable bag once you have removed personal information. You should then put the medication is another bag mixed with an “undesirable substance,” like coffee ground or cat litter, before you recycle it.
