Water-powered cars tested by researchers

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Gas prices too high for you at the pump? Imagine filling up your car with water instead.

That is exactly what researchers are trying to test.

Chemists are working to figure out a way to efficiently convert solar energy into chemical fuel. Their goal is to make filling up at the pump a thing of the past.

The car would use the power of the sun to split a water molecule turning it into hydrogen, ultimately fueling your car.

Chemistry Professor Dr. Tim Lian said “we will be able to realize the day where all energy we need is the solar energy and don’t need to burn fossil fuels anymore.”

Researchers say more studies need to be conducted before this becomes a reality for drivers.
