AUSTIN (KXAN) — One of Austin Country Club’s most high-profile members spoke Wednesday about the course hosting the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play next spring.
“I think it’s awesome for so many reasons,” long-time Austinite and 19-time PGA tour winner Tom Kite said. “It’s great for Austin to get a professional tournament of this magnitude. Selfishly, I think Austin Country Club is one of the top golf courses in the state.”
Austin Country Club will host the WCG Match Play beginning March 21, 2016. The top 64 players in the world rankings will make up the field.
The golf course at Austin Country Club is currently closed as it wraps up a restoration project. Still, members voted to host the event, despite it meaning more time that they will not be permitted to play their course.
“I’m very proud of what’s going on in this town right now and this is just another feather in our cap and another way of telling everybody what a cool place we live in,” club president Jim Cahill said.
The Austin Country Club was founded in 1899 and consists of an 18-hole Pete Dye design golf course.
If you can’t make it to the match, it will be airing on KXAN.
