MARBLE FALLS, Texas (KXAN) — You expect plenty of hard-hitting and tough tackling at a football game, but not when the referee is the target. Blindsided by not one but two players, it happened at Marble Falls. The players were from San Antonio’s Northside ISD John Jay High School, and now the video has gone viral.
This is senior Alex Roman’s fourth year playing football at Marble Falls High School. He showed KXAN photos of the team from Friday night, playing against San Antonio’s John Jay High, a game that ended with an unexpected twist.
“I was on the sideline and all of a sudden you see my offensive line say “hut” and you see flags and everything going crazy,” said Alex.
Alex says he’s never seen anything like it.
“I saw the ref go down, it was just shocking how that happened,” said Alex.
A John Jay player slams into the back of a referee and a moment later, a second player piles on.
Alex wears a helmet and pads playing defensive end for the Mustangs. And he says it still hurts when he gets tackled, so he can only imagine what the ref was feeling when he got hit.
“It hurts, I’ll give you that. I’m just saying, the ref didn’t have any gear and those guys just went up to that ref, oh I feel a lot of pain for that ref,” said Alex.
The two John Jay High players have been suspended. A school district spokesman calls the video disturbing, saying it’s not the good sportsman-like behavior they teach students, and they won’t tolerate it.
Marble Falls High does not want to comment on this situation right now. Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen says they’re letting the investigation play out.
The Marble Falls Police Department is investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
The Department is expected to release more information sometime this week.
