AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN/AP) — Governor Greg Abbott presented the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to representatives of Chief Petty Officer Chris Kyle, the slain “American Sniper,” and Lt. Col. Ed Dyess.
The Texas Legislative Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the state or federal military forces by the State of Texas.
A native Texan, Lieutenant Colonel Dyess was one of the first to fire on the Japanese as they attacked Pearl Harbor in December of 1941.
Chief Petty Officer Kyle, is known was the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle’s military work was remembered in the movie “American Sniper.”
The awards were given at the Governor’s Mansion. Governor Abbott said “Kyle was as feared by his enemy as he was cheered by his fellow Americans.”
