Police: 13-year-old driving at time of fatal crash on 183

AUSTIN (KXAN) – According to the Austin Police Department, a 13-year-old boy was driving the truck that went through a red light and crashed, leaving both him and a passenger dead on Thursday.

According to APD, 13-year-old Johan Maldonado and 16-year-old Vanessa Maldonado were killed after the Toyota Tacoma they were in was T-boned by an 18-wheeler around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of Highway 183 at Burleson Road.

The Tacoma had run a red light, said APD. Johan was found to be driving at the time.

Three people were in the Tacoma. Vanessa was pronounced deceased at 1:14 p.m. and Johan was pronounced deceased at 1:51 p.m.

The third passenger is still in the hospital with serious injuries at UMC Brackenridge.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. Another driver in a Ford F-150 struck after the initial collision received non-life threatening injuries.

This case is still being investigated. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5789.

This is Austin’s 66th fatal traffic crash and the 71st fatality of 2015. At this time in 2014, there were 34 fatality crashes and 41 fatalities.
