AUSTIN (KXAN) — B-Cycle Austin has launched a new membership program to help those who live in Austin with an annual income of $25,000 or less. Those who qualify receive an annual B-Cycle membership for $5.
The program is designed to increase the usage of bike share in low-income neighborhoods. Austin was one of seven cities selected for a $50,000 grant from the Better Bike Share Partnership and a $10,000 grant from the Downtown Austin Alliance. The Housing Authority of the City of Austin donated $20,000 in matching funds to help offset the cost of the new stations at Santa Rita and Chalmers courts.
Geneva Hernandez was the first person to sign up for the program. She and her three little boys are looking forward to taking a cruise around town on the bikes.
”I think this a good thing for us in the community. It’s a good thing for the family to do together, ride the bikes and everything. And the of course the price is good enough for us being here and low-income.”
Three new B-Cycle stations have been set up at Santa Rita Courts, Chalmer Courts and Capital Studios. There are 400 memberships available and the goal is to have them all filled in six months.
Those interested in enrolling can contact Austin B-cycle at (512) 954-1665 for more information.
