NEW JERSEY (KXAN) — 2009 Pflugerville high school graduate Ik Enemkpali has been released by the New York Jets after sucker punching quarterback Geno Smith Tuesday morning, according to Jets head coach Todd Bowles.
“You can’t tolerate that,” Bowles said. “You have a team and you have a bunch of side issues, you can’t tolerate that.”
Smith suffered a broken jaw that will require surgery and is expected to be out for six to 10 weeks.
Tuesday afternoon, Enemkpali released a statement saying, “I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans. Geno and I let our frsutration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation.”
There are multiple reports that the fight stemmed from a $600 debt smith owed Enemkpali for not showing up to the second-year linebacker’s annual camp last month at Pflugerville High School.
“This is something that happened within the locker room, and we’re dealing with it internally,” Bowles said. “It was something very childish that sixth graders could have talked about and it had no reason happening.”
Enemkpali was a sixth round draft pick in 2014 out of Louisiana Tech University. Enemkpali was expected to compete for a backup spot after playing in six games during his rookie season, recording 3 tackles.
