Businesses and shoppers enjoy tax free weekend

San Marcos, Texas (KXAN) — This was weekend is tax free weekend and there were people around the nation taking advantage of it.

Like Rachel Thomas and her husband. They were out today with their two daughters looking for school savings.

“We knew we wanted backpacks from Vera Bradley, so we made it there and now we are browsing to see the other shops and other savings we can make,” Rachel Thomas, a mother of two shares.

But folks like Rachel aren’t the only ones reaping the benefits of this holiday weekend.

Pam Couch is the owner of Two P’s and Calli’s Boutique and she says this weekend has been a blessing.

“The exciting thing to an owner is when you drive up to a parking lot and see people waiting at your front door,” Couch says.

With shoppers bringing in the cash, the store owner says she is up almost 20% from last year.

Now during tax free weekend you are only saving about 5% on your total purchase. So store owners are tacking on an extra discount to keep more money in your wallet.

“It’s a great way to give back to our community and customers and it helps us. So it is a win-win,” Couch says.

Rachel says she also saw other stores add discounts on big items. That is why she waits until tax free weekend to buy the most expensive Back to school items for her girls.

But even if stores don’t add that extra cut…5% is enough.

“It’s what you are applying that savings to, and shoes and backpacks are big items,” Thomas says.

We did some digging and According to the National Retail Federation, the average family will spend $630 this year for school.
So if you knocked out all that shopping this weekend, you would save about $50 dollars in taxes.
And we also found out that the middle to low income shoppers are the ones who mostly take advantage of the tax free holiday.
