Memorial ride held for teen killed while riding his bicycle

Saturday family and friends held a tearful memorial for Brian in East Austin.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Brian Silva would have turned 17 Friday but in June he was killed riding his bike down Johnny Morris Road.

Saturday family and friends held a tearful memorial for Brian in East Austin.

The memorial ride, with help from the Please Be Kind to Cyclists organization, rode to honor Brian’s life and send a message to the public.

Brian’s family hopes some good can come from their loss.

“I hope that his memory and his name won’t go in vain, won’t go without anything. That something will happen, we’ll have at least a sidewalk, you know something to keep people safe so this won’t happen to anyone else,” said Alejandro Silva, Brian’s cousin.

There are no sidewalks on the stretch of road where Brian was killed.

We’ve seen 65 traffic deaths in Austin so far in 2015—there were 63 in all of 2014.
