AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new initiative makes recycling in Downtown Austin a little bit easier.

Austin Resource Recycling announced their initiative, Recycling on the GO. The goal is to have a recycling bin next to every trash can in Downtown Austin.

The area receiving the new bins spans from Cesar Chavez to Third Street between San Antonio Street and Congress Avenue. Half of the trash cans in this area have already been converted into recycling bins and more will be added over the next few weeks to bring the total of recycling bins to nearly 50. Over the next three years the bins will start popping up all over Downtown Austin.

Mayor Steve Adler said, “Austin’s goal is Zero Waste by 2040, and the availability of recycling in public spaces is an important piece of our strategy to meet that goal. Increasing access to recycling while raising awareness is crucial to building a sustainable downtown.”

The new recycling cans are only the first phase in the initiative. The city’s goal is to keep 90 percent of Austin’s waste out the landfills by 2040.
