AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the January 1994 death of 3-month-old Brandon Baugh died Sunday night at University Medical Center Brackenridge.
Sources tell KXAN News 58-year-old Cathy Lynn Henderson had been ill for the past few weeks and was admitted to the hospital on June 24, 2015.
After 20 years of claiming the child’s death was an accident, in June 2015 Henderson pleaded guilty to intentionally killing the baby. Henderson was sentenced to 25 years in prison, including time already served. With 22 years already served behind bars, Henderson was serving the remaining three years of her sentence when she died.
For decades, Henderson claimed she dropped baby Brandon on a hard floor while babysitting him in Pflugerville; however, the Travis County medical examiner at the time found the damage to Brandon’s head was too severe to have been inflicted by an accidental fall.
In 2007, Henderson was saved from execution by a last-minute appeal. In 2012, an appeals court determined Henderson should be granted a retrial.
The Travis County Sheriff’s Office does not see any evidence of foul play in Henderson’s death at this time. Until they receive the test results from the autopsy, the Medial Examiner will wait to issue a final report with the cause of death.
