AUSTIN (KXAN) — The woman who died after a nine-vehicle crash in South Austin on Friday has been identified by Austin police.
Police say the crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Manchaca Road and West Slaughter Lane. Angelita Garza Titus, 72, died at the scene and five other people were transported with various injuries.
Investigators say a driver in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu was going southbound in the 9700 block of Manchaca Road when for unknown reasons, the driver lost control and started driving at a high speed. Police say the driver struck a gray Mitsubishi Outlander then continued on Manchaca where the driver hit a red Nissan Versa and a black Mazda CX-5, causing them to crash into five other vehicles that were stopped in the southbound lanes of Manchaca Road at the Slaughter Lane intersection.
Titus was in the Nissan Versa.
This is Austin’s 60th fatal traffic crash and the 64th fatality of 2015. At this time in 2014, there were 29 fatality crashes and 36 fatalities.
