AUSTIN (KXAN) — 49 years ago today, peace and quiet turned to horror and tragedy when a sniper opened fire from the UT tower. Charles Whitman went up to the top, fired on and killed 14 people and wounded 32 others before he was shot and killed by Austin police. The 96-minute shooting spree was one of the first mass shootings in U.S. history.
In preparation for the 50th anniversary next year, one Austin filmmaker is telling the story like it’s never been told before. Director Keith Maitland joins us this morning to talk about Tower and Josh Jacobs, the director of film at the Bullock Museum, with how survivors can share their experiences.
