AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police are investigating a car accident that killed one man and sent another to the hospital Thursday morning.

Police say a car and a SUV collided head-on about 12:40 a.m. at the intersection of Manchaca Road and Old Manchaca Road in far south Austin.

Sgt. Joe Lorett with APD says the SUV was heading southbound on Manchaca Road and the car was heading northbound when one of the vehicles crossed over into oncoming traffic. He says there is no median dividing the north and southbound lanes.

EMS says medics at the scene declared the driver of the car, Robert Kirkpatrick Gaston Jr, 18, dead at 12:53 a.m. Medics took the driver of the SUV to University Medical Center Brackenridge with potentially serious injuries.

Manchaca Road was closed for a time while police investigated, but it has since reopened.
