ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Throughout the Dell Diamond and all over social media, you can see the hashtags #TeamJana and #JanaStrong. While it’s just words, these words convey a message.
Two weeks ago, Jana Almendarez, the wife of Express GM Chris Almendarez, learned she had an inoperable brain tumor and was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
“Jana’s such a great spirit,” says J.J. Gottsch, Chief Operating Officer of Ryan Sanders Baseball. “And to realize that something like that can happen to her and to her family, I think it really puts into perspective, for all of us, really to take a step back and look at what’s important in life.”
The hashtags have caught on with everyone in baseball, from Huston Street to rival teams, and all the way to the big leagues.
“Once you kind of get into the game and you become a part of the family, it doesn’t matter where you are, whose team you’re on, what level you’re on, it’s a supportive rally. I think it’s really a testament, not only to Ryan Sanders Baseball and the Express, but really, the Almendarez family,” says Gottsch.
Along with the social media campaign, a Gofundme page has been launched to help the Almendarez family with medical expenses. On Sunday night, the team donated $150 to the family for every strike out the Express threw.
“To be able to see the amount of support, as you’ve talked about, from all over, to know that they’re taking the time out of their day to think about you, support you, pray for you, I think that means probably more than anything to them to be able to keep that positive attitude going.”
