Austin Fire Department installs smoke detectors in Austin neighborhoods

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department began proactively fighting fires and saving lives this week, installing smoke alarms in Austin resident’s homes.

Beginning on Thursday firefighters visited 70 homes, and installed 98 smoke alarms in 30 homes that lacked protection in the Single Shot neighborhood in East Austin.

This is the same neighborhood that a woman died after her house caught on fire earlier in the week. The house was found to have no working smoke detectors.

On Sunday, firefighters visited the Little Texas mobile home park on Bluff springs where they installed 50 smoke alarms in 24 of the residences.

City of Austin residents that need a smoke alarm can call AFD’s hotline at (512)-974-0299 or visit their website. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
