Task force will oversee campus carry plan for UT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Even though the campus carry law doesn’t go into effect until Aug. 1, 2016, University of Texas Austin President Greg Fenves says he’s assembling a task force to create policies that comply with the new law.

The plan will be formed with input from UT System Chancellor William McRaven and the Board of Regents.

The law allows Texas residents who have concealed handgun licenses to carry handguns onto a higher education campus. The law does allow for each campus to develop their own protocols and designate areas as “gun-free zones” within their campus.

“There is much concern within the university community about how the campus carry law passed by the Texas Legislature will affect faculty members, staffers and students,” Fenves said in a letter sent out on July 2.

The task force will be assembled later this summer.
