Ethics complaint filed against Austin Councilman Don Zimmerman

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin City Councilman Don Zimmerman is calling an ethics complaint filed against him “completely bogus” and “comical.”

Austin consultant Mark Walters filed the complaint over comments posted on Facebook “alleging council member Zimmerman, in a public forum followed by myself and other residents of the city of Austin, referred to gay individuals as pedophiles.”

In the complaint, Walters called the online remarks “irresponsible, unprofessional and abusive.”

“A bunch of people are going crazy,” Zimmerman told KXAN. “This is out of control.”

Zimmerman, who represents District 6 in Northwest Austin, posted comments implying the Supreme Court is deciding the country’s morals by approving gay marriage. Zimmerman wrote that some believe pedophilia should be legal, just as some believe in gay marriage, and questioned why pedophiles should be judged as criminals.

“Certain segments of the population look at pedophiles as the lowest forms of persons on the earth,” said Walters who is not happy about the comparison.

He has requested a public hearing on the matter within 20 days. The City’s Ethics Commission will decide whether to pursue an investigation against Zimmerman.

In a statement, Austin Mayor Steve Adler said he did not agree with Zimmerman’s comments.

“I am a strong supporter of equal rights for all and was proud to proclaim June 26 as Marriage Equality Day in the City of Austin,” he said. “As Mayor, I will continue to work to ensure a city that is diverse, vibrant, and respectful of all Austinites.”
