Don Zimmerman responds to controversial comments about same-sex marriage

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin city councilman has responded to some controversial comments he made online during a discussion about Friday’s same-sex marriage ruling.

Councilman Don Zimmerman, who represents District 6 in Northwest Austin, made comments implying the Supreme Court is deciding the country’s morals by approving gay marriage. Zimmerman wrote that some believe pedophilia should be legal, just as some believe in gay marriage, and questioned why pedophiles should be judged as criminals.

On Monday, Zimmerman spoke on Michael Cargill’s talk radio program, Come and Talk It. Cargill, who is gay, asked what Zimmerman thought would be the unintended consequences of the ruling.

Zimmerman then brought up the group The North American Man-Boy Love Association, which advocates for pedophilia, saying they may use the same tactics.

“I’m worried about NAMBLA taking a playbook,” said Zimmerman. “Copying a playbook which was used to get marriage redefined and use that playbook to redefine the age of consent.”

Zimmerman said he has no problem with consenting adults entering a contract with responsibilities like marriage, but did not go so far as to say he supports same-sex marriage.

KXAN has reached out to Zimmerman multiple times since he posted the comment on Friday and he finally got back to us on Tuesday. While he said he wasn’t ready to talk, he did say, “A bunch of people are going crazy. Haters are going nuts. I’ve got to let the haters calm down. This is out of control. I’ve got a lot of gay friends who are embarrassed.”

He and his team are gathering more. He says they’re working with the American Psychiatric Association on the issue of reclassifying pedophilia, where there’s a criminal side and non-criminal.

When it comes to the ethics complaint he says, “It’s completely bogus and comical.”
