Bomb sweep at San Marcos Walmart turns up nothing

John Charles Wilsford

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After San Marcos police evacuated the Walmart on State Highway 80 for more than four hours to investigate a bomb threat, they say no bomb was found and that a 30-year-old man is now charged with possession of a hoax bomb — a Class A misdemeanor.

Officers were called to the store at about 5:20 a.m. Monday, when they say John Charles Wilsford was found naked and unconscious in the store’s restroom. When police arrived, they say Wilsford had regained consciousness and was fully clothed and outside the store. That’s when he allegedly told police he had a bomb in his backpack.

Officers evacuated about 100 people from the store around 5:30 a.m., took Wilsford into custody and found his backpack just outside the front of the store. The store was closed for safety while they investigated, and it remains closed as of 1:30 p.m. The Austin Bomb Squad helped out San Marcos police with this incident. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
