AUSTIN (KXAN) — Early Thursday morning, Austin Fire Department and EMS crews helped Austin police catch a suspect who ran into Lady Bird Lake downtown.

Police say it all began when officers were responding to a disturbance call at 12:18 a.m. Thursday. A police officer tells KXAN a man was riding a bike on West Sixth Street when he crashed into a car and assaulted someone. Police say the man then ran away when officers tried to question him.

Officers say they chased him down to Cesar Chavez Street, where he jumped over the railing near the First Street Bridge and into Lady Bird Lake.

EMS says they got the call to help police at 1:02 a.m. Crews in an AFD boat — with an officer aboard — reportedly rescued the man just after 1:30 a.m. and brought him to shore to EMS rescue medics.

Police took the man into custody and took him to University Medical Center Brackenridge as a precaution. There is no word on what charges the man faces. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
