AUSTIN (KXAN)- Austin’s city council will take the next steps Thursday toward creating a sobriety center for the city where police would take people picked up for public intoxication.
City leaders plan to create a working group made up of members from Austin and Travis County. They’ll work on figuring out a location, governance structure and funding plan for the sobering center. City Manager Marc Ott will then work out how it will fit into the 2016 budget.
This is the result of a year’s worth of study and planning by a committee made up of the police chief’s staff, a local judge, city and county staff and members of the recovery community.
