AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Insurance Council of Texas estimates more than $1 billion of insured property was damaged as a result of flooding and other severe weather across the state during the month of May.

That puts it in the top five costliest disasters in recent Texas history. The top three were hurricanes and tropical storms. The fourth was a North Texas hailstorm in 1995 which cost insurers $1.1 billion.

“Hopefully the worst of the thunderstorm season has passed,” said Mark Hanna, a spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas. “But now consumers and businesses need to make sure that repairs are done by reputable businesses and be on the lookout for scam artists looking to advantage of the May storm damage.

For more perspective, the 2011 Bastrop County wildfires cost $360 million.
