Family finds new beginning after flood with help from strangers

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — This is a moment the Martin and Marie Ford will never forget. Not just because it was their wedding day, but because the road to get here was not exactly a fairy tale.

Their home was completely destroyed during the Memorial Day Weekend floods.

“Most of our stuff was downstairs and three feet of water came into our house in less than 15 minutes,” said Martin Ford.

The couple and their three children were forced to seek shelter at the local resource center, and that is where their lives were forever changed.

“All of a sudden this lady came up to me and she’s like, ‘Do you have a family?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah,'” Ford said.

Cathy Dillon, who owns Crystal River Inn, then offered the family a place to stay, free of charge. And the generosity did not stop there.

The family of five had no car, but after walking into the inn, several people got together to change that.

From a roof over their heads, to a car, and finally, a perfect place to have a wedding. But none of this would have happened without the generosity of strangers like Teri Moreno.

“I think they were chosen because God puts us in line with people that we are meant to give and to share with,” she said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
