Angelo State student killed as Jet Ski collides with kayak

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — San Angelo police have recovered the body of a 21-year-old Angelo State University student whose kayak was involved in a collision with a Jet Ski on Lake Nasworthy. Authorities say Manuel Rivas Jr. wasn’t wearing a life jacket when his kayak was hit.

Police say the 29-year-old driver of the Jet Ski told officers the setting sun Saturday impeded his vision and that he didn’t see Rivas and a 19-year-old woman in another kayak next to him. The woman, also an Angelo State student, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a head injury and later released. Rivas’ body was recovered Sunday.

Authorities say the Jet Ski driver showed no signs of intoxication. No charges have been filed, and no citations were immediately issued. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
