Woman shot dead after five-hour standoff with APD SWAT officers

Shirtley Avenue officer involved shooting.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman is dead after a five-hour standoff with the Austin Police Department’s SWAT team early Monday morning.

Police said they were called to the Chelsea Park Apartments in the 6500 block of Shirley Avenue around 1:30 a.m. for a suicidal woman. A man called 911 saying girlfriend, later identified as 31-year-old Cassandra Bolin, threatened to commit suicide.

SWAT was called out a short time later and spent several hours trying to negotiate with Bolin to come out peacefully.

Officers said Bolin had been yelling profanities and making gestures at officers. At one point, they said she came out, and defied officers’ orders to stop. Officers fired a “less-lethal” projectile, and she went back into her apartment.

Just after 6 a.m., the situation turned into a deadly shooting. Police said Bolin came out of the apartment holding a weapon – first pointing it at herself, and then pointing it at SWAT officers.

Austin Police say a SWAT officer saw his colleagues were in danger, and fired.

They had seen her wearing the same weapon in a holster inside the apartment previously.

The officer involved has been with APD for more than seven years. He was placed on administrative leave per standard procedure.

This is the second officer-involved shooting in Austin in as many days. On Sunday, officers shot and injured a man in East Austin.
