Construction at E. 51st Street near Cameron Road causing headaches for businesses

Construction at Cameron Road and IH-35

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Construction along E. 51st Street near Cameron Road in central Austin is causing a traffic headache for nearby businesses and drivers. The City of Austin and TxDOT are working together to improve the intersection.

Part of the work is restoring the northbound frontage road of IH-35 from Cameron Road as well as 51st and 53rd Streets.

Albert Cordova is the manager of Ferguson’s Plumbing he’s noticed a huge difference in the amount of business he’s getting.  “You practically have to force your way out of these driveways now. If you’re a customer, you know there’s a problem here. You’re not going to come over here to deal with this traffic.”

The people who run the Hope Family Thrift Store are not only worried about the congestion, but the safety.

“The removal of this turning lane [IH-35 from East 51st Street] has caused a very dangerous situation for HFTS customers and disaster survivors. Due to the removal of the turning lane, traffic backs up several blocks to up to 3/4 of a mile down East 51st Street, causing a bumper to bumper situation in front of the store and Ferguson Plumbing,” said Rita Davis with the Hope Family Thrift Store in a statement. “Over the last eight days, there have been two accidents due to vehicles trying to pull in to Ferguson’s Plumbing and/or HFTS entrances.”
