AUSTIN (KXAN) — Bus monitors have been added to all routes involving students from Walnut Creek Elementary School. The move comes after an Austin ISD bus driver was charged last week with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old student at his driver’s station on multiple occasions.
Leon Young, 61, bonded out of jail Monday.
Authorities learned of the incident April 17 after two Walnut Creek Elementary School students told district police they saw the assault. During an interview with the 6-year-old on April 22, the girl said Young hugged her and gave her candy before assaulting her. The girl and other witnesses said this happened on several occasions, the affidavit said.
On April 23, an assistant principal recalled an instance in late January where he saw the girl standing between Young’s legs and the driver touching the girls shoulder or back, the document said. The assistant principal said he spoke with Young and told the driver not to touch the students. The administrator resigned on Friday, according to district officials.
The bus monitors will remain in place for the remainder of the school year.
