AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl he met through an online dating site, according to an arrest affidavit. During an interview with police on April 11, the girl told police she met Chad Matthew Allen, 38, on OkCupid and that they had sex on two separate occasions.
Allen picked the girl up from a bus stop after school and took her back to his Northwest Austin home, court documents show.
The girl’s mother told police she learned of the incident after a doctor discovered her daughter had contracted a sexually transmitted disease, the document said. Police said they also found sexually explicit text messages between the girl and Allen on the girl’s phone, along with a picture of Allen.
When contacted by authorities on May 5, Allen said he would need to speak with his attorney and did not provide a statement. He was booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of sexually assaulting a child. His bond was set at $25,000.
Amanda Van Hoozer with the Center for Child Protection says more teenagers are using apps on their cell phones and that in many cases, they are lying about their age.
“We see those numbers continuing to go up and see kids continuing to be victimized,” said Van Hoozer. “They’re going to be getting onto sites. And lots of sites say you have to be 18, but all you have to do is put in a birth date, and they can make that up.”
According to OkCupid’s terms and conditions, the site is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age.
“If you are under 18, you are not authorized to use this website and will not be afforded access to any features of this website that allow for you to provide information to us or to share information with other users of this website,” the site says.
Van Hoozer also said it is important for parents to talk to their kids and know which apps they are downloading on their phones.
“There’s software out there for computers and monitors for cell phones,” Van Hoozer said. “So you know what they’re clicking on and doing so you can pay attention and ask questions about it.”
Allen has a criminal background, including credit card abuse. According to OkCupid’s website, the company does not conduct criminal background checks on its users. It is illegal in Texas to have sex with anyone under the age of 17, even if it is consensual.
