AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Travis County inmate who was collecting trash in front of the Travis County Correctional Complex on Wednesday morning collapsed and died. According to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office,  a passerby saw 50-year-old Corey Carlson collapse.

The passerby notified the officers in the parking area as well as Corrections Officers in the Visitation Center’s lobby. Jail medical staff and Austin-Travis County EMS transported the inmate to the hospital, but he died a short time later.

Carlson was assigned to the Sheriff’s Weekend Alternative Program (SWAP) to serve a sentence from a DWI arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office says while they don’t expect foul play in Carlson’s death, they will wait on the autopsy report to determine cause of death.
