MARTINDALE, Texas (KXAN) — A man died Sunday after falling out of his canoe along the San Marcos River in Caldwell County. Two people were trying to get into the water near the Main Street dam in Martindale when the man, who was approximately 30 years old, fell out of the canoe, according to Martin Ritchey with the Caldwell County Office of Emergency Management.

The man was not wearing a life jacket, Ritchey said, and the water was deep and moving swiftly at the time. His friends were not able to help him and his body was recovered from the river about 6:40 p.m.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning. The Caldwell and Guadalupe county line runs along the river.

Editor’s Note: Martindale Police originally said the man was 19 years old, but the Caldwell County OEM said the man was about 30 years old. The victim’s family said the man knew how to swim. Ritchey originally told KXAN the man couldn’t swim. The story has been updated to reflect this information.
