Man sues Austin PD after officer shot and killed dog

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man is suing the Austin Police Department more than a year after an officer shot and killed his dog. Julian Reyes said APD Officer Daniel Walsh shot the dog April 24, 2013, and then seized the animal’s body without giving it an autopsy or proper investigation. He also claims the officers illegally searched him and the animal.

At the time, the department told KXAN their primary objective when responding to calls is protecting themselves and others who are near a seemingly aggressive animal.

The suit says Reyes is seeking damages and mediation on transparency, changes in policy and procedure, changes in training and increased accountability for future dog shootings. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
