AUSTIN (KXAN) – Teachers rallied in front of Austin ISD headquarters Monday, demanding more money from the district. The Education Austin Union said the quality of education is reflected by its employees and a 5 percent pay increase is needed.
“We have to invest in high quality teachers, high quality employees ,” said Ken Zarifis, president of Education Austin. “I want those people in front of my kids every single day.”
District officials said they continue to talk with the Senate to push for the 5 percent increase. Earlier this month, Austin ISD Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz told KXAN his first priority if the legislature increases school funding will be to increase pay and benefits. He said that is the only way to stay competitive in recruiting teachers and staff.
