UT students construct home powered entirely by the sun

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Some students at the University of Texas are constructing a home that could become the standard in green living. The Solar Decathlon team is building a home, dubbed NexusHaus, that will be entirely powered by the sun. It is part of a competition put together by the federal government.

A special delivery of equipment Wednesday helped jumpstart the construction. Members of the team say this house won’t replace the typical single-family home, but could go into a backyard — which could be helpful in a growing city like Austin.

“You’re going to be putting twice as many people with twice as much demand for electricity and water,” said Co-captain and Project Engineer Charles Upshaw. “To avoid having to upgrade all the infrastructure this house is going to be solar powered.”

UT students are working with students from the Technical University of Munich on the design. While Germany has more cloudy days than Austin on average, Germans are accustomed to solar power. Germany’s power grid uses about 10 times as much solar energy as the United States.
