Group homes in Austin

The health department estimates there are dozens of privately-owned group homes around Austin. They are generally unregulated except for enforcement of existing city fire and health codes. Unlike Dallas and Houston, Austin has no zoning ordinances in place limiting the size or standards of group homes or their staff.

Some homes fall onto a list of state-approved homes for ex-convicts, others house people with mental illnesses or women with children who have fallen on hard times. In homes where medical or other ongoing care is provided to adults, the state lays out standards. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
