AUSTIN (KXAN) — Nine people were taken to the hospital Tuesday following a seven-car crash the closed northbound lanes of Interstate 35 for several hours and snarled traffic during the evening commute. The wreck happened about 6 p.m. near Riverside Drive in South Austin.
Austin-Travis County EMS said two people were trapped in their cars, including one person inside a motor home. Eight adults and one child were taken to the hospital with serious injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening, medics said.
Traffic was backed up for several miles in both directions as crews worked to clear the crash scene. All northbound lanes reopened about 8 p.m. At least one lane of southbound I-35 was briefly closed as rescue crews used the inside lane to access the crash site.
Authorities are still working to determine what caused the crash.
