AUSTIN (KXAN) — This weekend kicks off National Park Week and during the opening weekend, admission is free to all 407 national parks. The National Park Service turns 100 next year and park officials want to make some long needed repairs before the celebration begins.
Last year, a record 292 million people visited national parks like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone or Skyline Drive in Virginia. Some visitors came across crumbling rock walls, cracked bathrooms sinks and paved walkways covered in moss. NPS estimates it’ll need $11.5 billion to fix maintenance projects that have been neglected for years.
