‘Sanctuary city’ debate heating up

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police across the state could soon be allowed to ask people about their citizenship. The Texas Senate is taking up a bill that would ban so-called “sanctuary cities.” Sanctuary cities, such as Austin, prohibit officers from asking about someone’s immigration status.

Some civil rights groups and police departments criticized the bill because they say it will push people living in the state illegally “underground.”
