Citizen Police Academy goes behind the scenes at APD

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Right now, 80 Austinites are participating in a program that gives them a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be an Austin police officer. They are members of APD’s Citizen Police Academy.

According to Austin police, the Academy was established in 1987 as a “forum to present information and promote understanding regarding police work.” The Academy has produced over 1,800 graduates. Some of the graduates are members of the Austin Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.

On Wednesday night, the Association is holding a fundraiser called Chicken with the Chief. People will have a chance to meet Chief Art Acevedo — and learn about the Police Academy program at the same time.

The fundraiser gets underway at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Ms. P’s Fried Chicken on South Congress Avenue.
