AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man and woman who stopped to check on a fender-bender ended up getting robbed and beaten by another driver, police say. According to court documents, a woman said she was trying to enter the South Interstate 35 ramp near Woodward Street when her car was hit by a late-model red Dodge Charger with temporary license plates.
The two drivers pulled into a shopping center parking lot to exchange information. While outside their cars, the woman’s passenger got into an argument with the driver of the Dodge, Raul Manriques, 33, over who was at fault. When the woman took out her cellphone to take a photograph of the temporary license plate, Manriques punched her in the face, took her cellphone and proceeded to kick her while she was lying on the ground, according to the affidavit.
When the victim’s passenger tried to call 911, Manriques punched and kicked him as well. The victim told police the suspect also stole his wallet and cellphone.
Manriques wasn’t linked to the robbery until March 16, when police pulled him over for possibly firing shots near a North Austin nightclub. While conducting a search of his car, officers found a driver’s license belonging to one of the victim’s in the robbery.
Manriques is currently in the Travis County Jail charged with robbery.
