Longhorns back on the field for spring practice

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Longhorn football team opened spring practice on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Denius Practice Fields. Head Coach Charlie Strong said the quarterback position is up for grabs between Tyrone Swoopes, the incumbent who started their final 12 games, and redshirt freshman Jerod Heard.

Strong said he would like to have a better idea who the starter is for the fall by the end of spring. The team is allowed 15 practices, which includes the spring game on April 19 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. Another one of Strong’s biggest concerns is building team chemistry.

“When you don’t have team chemistry, its all about individualism,” Strong said. “It’s all about their talent and they don’t think of anyone but themselves, so we just have to build it where it becomes a team. When you look at teams that go win, its all about the team. The individuals are part of it and your individual talents come out because you’re having so much success as a team and that’s what we haven’t had, we just have to have success as a football team.”

There are a number of players who are either out or will be limited during spring drills.

Players who are out:

  • WR Roderick Bernard (knee)
  • DE Caleb Bluiett (knee)
  • DT Desmond Jackson (foot)
  • DT Chris Nelson (shoulder)
  • DE Derick Roberson (shoulder)

Players who will be limited during spring drills:

  • RB Duke Catalon (knee)
  • OG Sedrick Flowers (back)
  • DT Alex Norman (back)
  • DE Quincy Vasser (knee)
