Big matchups on tap for remainder of NCAA Tournament

Wisconsin, Arizona, Kentucky, Duke and Gonzaga were the heavyweights this season, and they're all still alive.

CLEVELAND (MEDIA GENERAL/WNTH) – The heavyweights are still in the fight to win the NCAA national title. Kentucky, Duke, Gonzaga, Arizona and Wisconsin were the teams most people picked to win the title in their brackets, and they are all still alive. That means we’re in for some great basketball ahead.

Wild About the ‘Cats

“Kentucky is still in the driver’s seat to win the national title, and the Wildcats showed just how remarkably talented they are in dispatching Cincinnati in the Round of 32,” said Kels Dayton, executive producer of The Bearcats were in that game for about 30 minutes, and after that, everything fell apart. “You’ve almost got to play a perfect game to beat Kentucky because their talent is so overwhelming,” Dayton said.

Duke-ing It Out

Duke also looks like a national championship team, and the way they handled San Diego State on Sunday was incredibly impressive, Dayton wrote after this weekend’s matchups. “I thought coming into the tournament that Utah had a shot to knock them off in the Sweet 16, but it doesn’t look that way now. Duke is like a heavyweight champ just coming into his stride,” Dayton said.

Zig-Zagging Into the Sweet 16

“It’s great to see Gonzaga get back to the Sweet 16, and they should get past UCLA and get back to the Elite Eight for the first time since ’99,” said Dayton. “The ‘Zags are playing incredibly well and showed exactly what type of team they can be in dismantling Iowa.”

According to Dayton, with the exception of Virginia, which had lost its way down the stretch and was dealing with the injury and then comeback of Justin Anderson, all of the nation’s championship contenders are still around heading into the second weekend.

“That means we’re in for some incredibly exciting games and some big-time matchups, which we didn’t really see last season because Kentucky and UConn just decided to take over,” Dayton said.

So get ready to sit back and watch some great hoops. It’s going to be fun to watch the contenders duke it out to be the last one standing. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
