SXSW performer ‘Yung Gleesh’ charged with sex assault

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A rapper who performed multiple shows during South By Southwest has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman. Asa Asuncion, 25, who goes by the stage name “Yung Gleesh,” has not yet been arrested and was scheduled for performances in Dallas on Monday before flying back to his home in Washington, D.C., according to an arrest affidavit.

According to Austin Police, they met the victim at St. David’s Hospital on the morning of March 20. The woman said she and a friend had gone out the night before and ended up at another friend’s home in North Central Austin. She admitted to being intoxicated and passing out around 2:30 a.m. According to the victim’s friend, Yung Gleesh and his friends arrived at the home an hour later. Witnesses said Yung Gleesh was a friend of one of the men who lived at the home.

Around 6 a.m., the victim’s friend, who went out with her the night before, said she woke up and found Yung Gleesh on top of the victim and both were mostly unclothed. The victim’s friend said she pulled Yung Gleesh off her friend and a verbal altercation took place before the victim was taken to the hospital.

The investigating officer said by the time police arrived to the home, Yung Gleesh had left but his manager was still there and told police the performer was scheduled to drive to Dallas for shows and then fly back to D.C. After the alleged incident, Palm Door at 4th and Sabine streets said Yung Gleesh was a no-show to a performance over the weekend, and the rapper also canceled his planned show in Dallas.

Yung Gleesh was at SXSW in 2014 according to one of the many videos the performer has on YouTube. The SXSW website had a page devoted to Yung Gleesh with a list of his performances. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
